Kiki’s story: pushed in one direction
Kiki (67) was “thrown on the boat” at the age of five, as she describes it. She is on her way to Holland with her parents. On the boat, she turns six. The stay in the Netherlands was supposed to be temporary, but the family never left. Her parents often argue. Kiki’s mother blames her husband for being here in this cold frog country. She misses her motherland constantly. Her mother is very angry about this. She feels forced in a direction. Charlotte’s story: dons in a juvenile prison
Charlotte (59) has had a lump near her foot since she was 55. During this time, her mother was brought home with Alzheimer’s. When Charlotte was 20, her mother developed breast cancer. This is the reason Charlotte stopped taking the pill. It was a tumultuous period, during which Charlotte became pregnant with a daughter. Charlotte says her relationship with her daughter is not good. Her daughter was forcibly committed to a juvenile detention center when she was 12, while mother sought help only from juvenile services. A highly undesirable situation. Charlotte feels that daughter blames her for this; that it is Charlotte’s fault that she was forced into juvenile detention.
The story of Mirte: forced into a straitjacket
Mirte (62) has two daughters. The relationship with her eldest daughter is distant, her daughter calling only when she is sick or needs something. Her youngest daughter has had fibromyalgia since she was 14. Mirte has traveled town and country to help her daughter with this. “Meanwhile, I found out that by doing this I was also perpetuating her illness. Yes certainly I am manipulative, it has to be my way.” Mirte also talks about how important it is for her to earn money and be able to support herself. Continue reading fibromyalgia.
At age 25, the lump develops near her big toe. Mirte’s mother married at 25 during the war. She didn’t actually want to get married, but father persevered. A forced situation? Her mother will have two sons. Ten years later, after two more miscarriages, Mirte arrives. Mother can’t believe her luck. Yet as a child, Mirte lacks a real mother. “I was a doll to my mother when I was little. I had to look exemplary. I was forced to live in a straitjacket the way she wanted me to. After Mirte’s birth, her father becomes ill. He dies when she is four years old. When Mirte is fourteen, her mother remarries and from this moment on there is war in the house. Mirte hates her stepfather. From the age of four Mirte has no father; from the age of fourteen she feels she has lost her mother. Mirte’s youngest daughter develops fibromyalgia at age fourteen. Mirte says, “The relationship with my mother and my oldest daughter hurts, but I can’t change it.”
