Heart murmur baby

Heart murmurs involve waves or eddies, which can be heard with a stethoscope. Usually a heart murmur is harmless. There is then nothing wrong with the heart. The murmur is caused by the powerful and rapid flow of blood in the heart and the large blood vessels around the heart.

When the heart beats a little faster than normal, this flow can be heard a little better. The doctor may also hear an abnormal heart murmur. This sounds a little louder. In adults, this may indicate an underlying heart defect.

Heart murmurs in babies

A heart murmur in a baby under 6 months of age is usually harmless. A pediatric cardiologist should assess this, however, as it may indicate a congenital heart defect:

1. a hole in the septum between the atria(ASD) or ventricles(VSD)
2. a heart valve defect
3. problems with the large blood vessels of the heart
